Hank’s first acting job was in an advertisement for Italian TV when he was 17 years old. He had originally thought of working in theatre and he had set up a company called Big Theatre with Oliver Platt. The only show they ever performed in their theatre was The Dumb Waiter produced by Harold Pinter. He then decided to work in television and moved to Los Angeles after getting a work offer from talent agent Harry Gold. He had very few lines in his early acting roles in the series Joe Bash and in the film Nitti: The Enforcer.

In LA, he was trained by acting coach Roy London. He worked as a stand-up comedian and bartender in between his acting jobs. He became famous for his voice works in the ongoing television series 'The Simpsons'. He has been doing the voice work for the town bartender character, Moe Szyslak. Other than Moe, he has voiced many characters including, Chief Wiggum, Snake Jailbird, Comic Book Guy, Lou, Carl Carlson, Bumblebee Man, and Apu. Some of the other voice works that he has done are Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Anastasia, Stressed Eric, Hop, and Happy Feet Two.

He took on live-action roles after the success of The Simpsons. He has starred in Growing Pains, Herman’s Head, Tuesdays with Morrie, Uprising, Huff, Free Agents, Ray Donovan, Friends, and many more. In the film, he made his debut with Cool Blue. Other famous film works he has worked on are Pretty Woman, Godzilla, America’s Sweethearts, Chicago 10, Immigrants, Love & Other Drugs, The Smurfs, and Out of the Blue. He also wrote and directed the short film Nobody’s Perfect. He led the film Outsourced.

For his works, he has been nominated for many awards. The awards that he has won are Outstanding Performance by a Cast, Outstanding Voice-Over Performance, Best Short Film, Best Narrative Short Film, and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.  He has won six Emmy awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Hank was dating actress Julie Warner in the early 1990s. Later in 1994, he was in a relationship with actress Helen Hunt.
